Barichara cathedral and chapels: yellow stone and five churches
The main church on the square honors the Virgin who, legend says, appeared carved on a rock in 1702. Around it, in a small town, stand four more chapels.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
It stands on the main square and is the first thing you see on arrival. Wikipedia calls it a unique work held up by ten carved monolithic columns, five meters tall and seventy centimeters wide, all in the yellow stone of the region.
The chapels
| Chapel | Worth knowing |
|---|---|
| Santa Bárbara | At the top of town; the stone front glows at sunset |
| Jesús Resucitado | Next to the cemetery |
| San Antonio | Listed by Wikipedia among places to visit |
| Nuestra Señora de la Piedra | Its name echoes the 1702 rock legend |

How to see them
Start at the cathedral, climb to Santa Bárbara and finish at the viewpoint; then head down to Jesús Resucitado and the cemetery. Opening hours depend on the parish, so the safe plan is to see them from outside and go in if there is a mass or an open door.
To sleep across from the cathedral, Alma Hotel Parque is a few meters from the square. The story behind all this is told in the history of Barichara.
